The Collection: Olivetti MP1

In the series "The Collection", the typewriters of maschinengeschrieben are presented. In the fourth issue today, we present the Olivetti MP1.

The from 1932 until the 1950s produced Olivetti MP1 is typically Italian: at first comes the design. Whether it  is also useful is not so important. Example Number 1: The infinitely long typebar way. The typebars lie almost horizontally in the normal position, to then cover a 140-degree angle and land with a such a force on the paper that you get really sorry for the platen.

And it is also noisy. The loudest of my machines. But this is just with the Italians.

That the bell sounds after slightly more than one half of the line - at least that's how it feels - is nice for the bell, but not very handy. Due to the long distances of the typebar way also the keys first feel a bit stiff, but after a few sentences, you would like to type on it forever. The feeling of the Olivetti to write is hard to describe. You have to try it.

The Olivetti M1 is comparable to the Continental 340, both write very pleasant with a

perfect type face, but the Continental is technically better equipped: If you type on the MP1 you have to switch the ribbon manually.

In der Reihe "The Collection" werden die aktuell bei maschinengeschrieben vorhandenen Schreibmaschinen vorgestellt. In der vierten Ausgabe präsentieren wir heute die Olivetti MP1. Typisch italienisch: Function follows Form. Die von 1932 bis in die 1950-er-Jahre produzierte Olivetti MP1 ist typisch italienisch: An erster Stehle kommt das Design. Ob das ganze auch prak- tisch ist, spielt keine so grosse Rolle. Beispiel Nummer 1: Der unendlich lange Tastenweg. Die Typen- hebel liegen fast horizontal in der Ruheposition, um dann einen 140-Grad-Winkel zurückzulegen und mit einer solchen Wucht auf das Papier aufzutreffen dass man richtig Mitleid mit der Walze bekommt. Und laut ist sie auch. Die lauteste meiner Maschinen. Aber so ist das eben mit den Italienern. Dass die Klingel bereits nach etwas mehr als der Hälfte der Zeile ertönt, so fühlt es sich jeden- falls an, ist ja schön für die Klingel, aber nicht besonders praktisch. bedingt durch die langen Tastenwege fühlen sich auch die Tasten zuerst etwas schwergängig an, nach einigen öatzen möchte man aber immer weiterschreiben. Das Gefühl, auf der Olivetti zu schreiben, ist kaum zu beschreiben. Muss man ausprobiert haben: Die Olivetti M1 ist mit der Continental 340 vergleichbar, beide schreiben sehr angenehm mit einem perfekten Schriftbild, die Continental ist aber technisch besser ausgestattet. Bei der MP1 darf man das Farbband nämlich noch selbst umschalten.
