Yeah, that Sears manual 1 I had was functional - it typed just fine, but it wasn't fun. It just felt cheap and sounded awful - hollow and clinky.
I'm sort of convinced that it wasn't the computer that killed the typewriter, but the fact that by the time the computer came around, all the typewriter manufacturers were pushing out machines that weren't of very good quality. They work fine, but feel like toys.
That's a good thought. But I wonder why they couldn't keep the quality. Maybe there was a pricing pressure which forced them to produce cheaper and cheaper...

It reminds me of the Chinese-made Rover. This must be the design they copied. Does the plastic have a strong smell?
That could really be the archetype of the chinese typewriter-copies. No, it doesn't smell bad.
