Basic Principles for Typewriting Identification.

a. The typefaces used by the different typewritermanuiacturers can be differentiated on thebasis of design and have dating significance.b. Through usage, typewriters develop individ-uality which can serve to identify the typewritingof a particular typewriter.c. The gradual development of typewriting in-dividuality plus ribbon condition and typefacecleanliness can be used to date a document orfixit within a period of time.d. Horizontal and vertical malalignment; tiltingcharacters; lack of uniformity of impressions (off-footedness); typeface scars, breaks, defects anddeformities; overall depth of impression; and re-bounding characters all serve to identify the type-writing of a particular machine.e. Some individualities are more unusual thanothers and thus have greater probative value.f. The principles underlying the identification oftypewriting are controlled by the mathematicalrules of probability as applied to independentevents.g. Peculiar habits of striking the typewriterkeys, spacing, arrangement, punctuation, incorrectcharacter usage, mistakes, corrections, etc. can beused to identify a typist or differentiate typists.h. A sheet of paper cannot be re-inserted in atypewriter in exact registerwith previous typingdone on the sheet of paper. This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

Iconic.

Iconic. The Olivetti MP1, also known as ICO, was designed in the 1930s. I find it incredible how its sculptural design still looks awesome these days. maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Olivetti MP1 ICO The design of the Olivetti MP1 ICO is stunning, even though the machine was made in the 1930s. The Type-On-The-Go Typewriter.

The Type-On-The-Go Typewriter The Corona 3 is the ideal type- writer for a Type—In or for typing in public. Why? Because it is small, cute, folding, old and a bit strange. But the Remington Portable 2 is that as well. So what makes the Corona 3 special? Some unused space in its case, which turns out to be incredibly practical: On the Corona 3 X-C, the variant with 90 keys, there is a 5.0 cm wide unused space on the left of the machine, between the body and the case when the carriage is folded over the keyboard. It's a happenstance that my camera in its case perfectly fits in there, but I already had other ideas of what to place there: A small piece of bread, a pocket flask, a spare ribbon, spare batteries for your camera, a wallet... The possibilities of placing practical things there are (almost) endless. Corona 3 maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com ++++++ Attention: I do not know if that space is the same size on other variants of the Corona 3, although I assume it is. The Collection: Continental 100

The Collection: Continental 100 In the series "The Collection", we present the type- writers on the shelves of maschinengeschrieben. This Friday, it's the Continental l00. In the early 1930s, the Wanderer—Werke started to produce a series of portable typewriters. the Conti« nental Kleinschreibmaschine. Several different models with more or less features, but all with the same design were produced in that decade. With only two exceptions: The Continental 200, an ultra-flat type- writer (Georg owns one}, of which very few facts are known, and the luxurios Continental 100, the top-of- the-line model with a boxy design and an entirely unioue way of setting tabs and margins. The Continental 100 was probably introduced in 1938 and cost 440 Fr. in Switzerland, which is about 3350 Fr. or 3425 USD. The Continental 100 clearly wasn't a cheap machine, therefore. only few models are known in the present day. And that's a shame, because the Continental 100 is a solid machine, has a nice design and the very clever tab-and-margin-in—one feature I discussed in an earlier post. The typing feel of the Continental 100 didn't appeal me at first, but after % page I've now typed, I think I might get used to it. It is like a Hermes 2000 minus the strong snap, which I didn't like there. A clear drawback is the carriage shift, which one definitely wouldn't expect from a "Luxusmodell". To make things worse, the key for the shifting needs to be pressed quite far down, about 9.5 cm. After all, this machine is better oualified for English typing with far less capital letters than German. One thing I need to add about the typing feel is that it's probably the slighty unusual noise, it seems nuite a bit damped and the typical clack is less distinct than I'm used to. Four out of Five stars for the typing feel, I'd say. Five for history. maschinengeschrieben.blogsnot.com Continental 100 This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

Basilisks just love typewriters.

Basilisks just love typewriters. In medieval fiction, a Basilisk is a mixture between a cock and a snake. Its glance is said to kill immediately. In 1474, a cock was sentenced to death in Basel. He was blamed for laying an egg, and the Basileans feared that a Basilisk might hatch from the egg. The cock was headed, the egg was set aflame. The Basilisk is now a hallmark of Basel. There are many fountains with Basilisk statues. And they don't kill, but they like typewriters. Accents.

Accents. I've been wondering for quite some time why Remington chose a completely different solution for writing accents (‘,‘) than any other typewriter manufacturer I know: Instead of having a dead key for the accents, where you type the accent, the carriage doesn't advance and then write the letter, you have to first write the letter and then type the accents, with the accent cantilevered, standing away from the type slug. At first, that solution may seem line total overkill and you wonder why the Remington engineers decided to go that way. Then, when writing in French, I suddenly realised why: You first write the "e" when handwriting in French, and then the ‘ for e. And with that Remington solution, it's the exact same principle, only on a typewriter: You type the We", the carriage advances and then, you type the ‘, which "goes back" one position. Terrible over~engineering, of course, but at least it makes sense. I can understand though that after World War 2, Remington dropped the cantilevering concept and used the standard principle on all machines. It's easier for us collectors as well. maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Remington Noiseless Deluxe This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

Typing Underwater.

Typing underwater. This weekend is the hottest this year, at lead:up to now — the administrations actually publisheda heat warning, but actually, it's only a bit over32 degrees Celsius - it's quite a change from thelast snow earlier this month, though. And aftera ride on a S-Bahn train without cooling and ashort walk afterwards, I declared the heat to beunbearable, grabbed my Tippa and sat into the coolwaters of tiny pool, which is more towards a concretecylinder wrapped with rusting metal, collectingrain water from our roof —excellent to water plantsand to cool down in a heat like this.So I sit on a little step in the pool, having theTippa on a wooden half that otherwise would coverthe pool if it's not in use. Works well, and isa really effective method of preventing your brainfrom melting inua heat wave.Actually, the temperature is already going downquite rapidly, as it's already past 6 PM, thereare also grey clouds incoming and a light breezeis starting to make me shiver - I think I'll endmy underwater typing here.June 30, 2012, 18:10. 29.8 degrees Celsius 'maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Adler Tippa This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere Hitzewelle 30.
