Vague speculation: the linkage between spacebar and escapement can be adjusted on many typewriters. Usually this involves turning a screw. On some big Royals, the linkage wire has a bend in it, and you are expected to bend the wire either more or less. Just follow the connections and you may see a simple way to adjust the machine.
My Royal QDL is currently with my repairer. It has the same issue where words are not properly spaced apart. I mentioned this to him and he said he would take a look at it. Hopefully, he'll find the cause of the problem, and if he does, I'll let you know.

I have several machines with that same problem, but I always get away by saying that "it's part of their personality..."
