I hate it when that happens... but I'm surprised you couldn't open older files with a newer version. Normally they are compatible with older formats. Maybe you should try copying the files again, perhaps they got corrupted during the transfer.
Now, for one instance of compatibility problems with typewriters, how about this: after spending 20 years or so using a trusty IBM Selectric, for which she bought 10 or 12 different spheres, a friend of mine suddenly had to migrate to a newer System 2000 daisywheel machine because her old Selectric went kaput... and she was really angry because she couldn't use the spheres in the new machine. :P
Strange that Libre Office will not handle the files. I do remember I had to do something to handle the new Micr$osft 4 letter file extensions or some other weird thing they did. That was over a year ago so I forget the details.
Open Office is a bit different than Libre. The latest version does not handle all the file types that Libre does.
At one time both were 99% equal. Not so since Oracle bought Sun and then the OO folks went out on their own last year.
Apache is not the Open Office organization and they have renamed it Apache Office or Apache Open Office. I think with Apache"s involvement the project will once again be more active.
You are 100% correct about the typewriters. None of these problems exist with a typewriter.
I hope and am confident you'll find a solution. From experience: important things you want to keep --> hardcopy. I am very surprised by the way that people trust in cloud computing and the like. No control whatsoever.
