Guest in The Collection: Remington Rand, 17 KMC

In the series "The Collection" the typewriters of maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com are presented. Because at the moment there are no other machines in my possession, today helps the Remington Rand 17 KMC of my family out, the first typewriter on which I wrote anything.

Built like a tank, floating like an aircraft carrier
There's no trace of filigreeness on the from 1939 to 1950 produced Remington Rand, 17: With just under 24 cm height and 37 cm depth, this office machine is the dominant element on every desk. In front of the writer there's a steep wall: Immediately after the keyboard and the broad tabulator key there's an almost overhanging part of the case, one is afraid of getting roped into the text, or, as Franz Hohler (swiss comedian and author) sang, to be swallowed by the machine . Nevertheless, the function of the 17 is excellent. The 15.9 kg of the heavy office worker can probably all that could be asked in an office anyway. Already on the front there are four small levers, by their function, except the ribbon choice, I have no idea. Also, how the rotation of the roller, can be set in increments of 1 from 1-6. Noteworthy is that the american machine also has a 0-key available and that not the big 'o' must be used, there's also is a type with the Swiss Fr-character present. A total of 44 keys are available.
The writing feel on the Remington is a very special. Thanks to "floating shift" (types go down) is the upper case very easily, but the keys itself have to be pressed more severely . With the KMC feature (keyboard margin control) it's possible to adjust the page margins with buttons, very accurate, but somewhat confusing to use.

One of the classic machines. Mine came from strikethru, and did a lot of pages last November.

Hi, it's a wonderful machine! The lever on the upper left helps to push back the keys in case some are mashed up together.
Right under this is the lever that reverses the course of the ribbon. The lever on the right next to the ribbon choice is for regulating typing tension (it doesn't make a lot of difference though).

Does your machine also have the problem of unintended spacing between letters?

@notagain: I thin this could be one of the machines I would choose if I had to write a longer text. :)

@schrijfmachine: Hey, that really works! I even had problems getting the keys stuck. Thansk for the other explanation, too. My machine doesn't have the spacing problem.

shordzi: Kannst du, musst du aber nicht. Täglich lesen wäre natürlich noch besser. ;D
