That is sad tale of typewriter woe. The discovery of the headless machine would have been the worst for me. Straight from optimism to techno despair.

I am weeping.

At least there were some typewriters. Here I can travel to a few near by cities, visit the few thrift stores, and never even see any kind of typewriter.

But I hope you still enjoyed the thrill of the hunt.

Looks like typewriters are indeed getting scarce. Personally I conduct most of my typewriter hunting online; not as exciting as taking a train to another city and visit thrift stores, but the results are sometimes better, usually the same.

Right now I have on my sights an IBM electric typewriter, pre-Selectric, moving typebars style, which is selling for... 15 dollars. Might be interesting to compare with the more recent designs and with the Smith-Corona electrics.

Thanks for your comments. I have bought most of my typewriters online, the majority of them for less than 20 CHF. Sometimes, though I go and hunt them the analog way, and I usually enjoy it - if I find anything working.

From all of the thrift stores I've visited here, including our equivalent to the salvation army, I've never found a typewriter :(
