Beware of noisy external hard drives, Florian! Those things continue spinning when they're plugged, regardless if the computer is on or not. When they start making noises like that, it's almost always a sign that they're soon going to develop mechanical problems, which means loss of data and peace of mind.

May I suggest keeping it unplugged while not in use, and considering replacing it ASAP?

I hope your drive did not die. Noise is a bad sign with hard drives.

Clack -- zip is a good noise with a typewriter.

My Western Digital MyBook drives have a sleep function which can be annoying is you expect data to spring into action immediately from that source. The light on the front just pulses in sleep mode. Others just spin until you turn them off or eject (unmount) them from the desktop. Worst is a network drive I have which is very quiet even when running and which I often forget to turn off. Miguel's right though. Anything more than a confident hum might be a prompt for backing-up to another drive.

Thanks for your comments, Miguel, Bill and Rob! I have a back-up ready - but I hope these events don't heap up!
