The Collection: antares compact

The Collection: antares ‘In the series "The Collection", new typewriters at maschinengeschriebei are presented. Today, it's the two-tone antares commonly called the "Antares compact". In the night sky, Antares is the brightest star in the Scorpius constellation. It is a red super- giant star, its radius is approximately 883 times that of the sun. Even though.the antares typewriter brand is named after such a huge thing, the machines the italian brand started to produce in 1954 are pretty small: The antares compact is 73 mm high and 3.6 kg heavy - without the plastic lid. The typebars are very short, giving the antares a snapgr typing feel, but I have to say that this also results in a "speed limit"; the antares is not a good choice to win a speed typing contest, it is really required to type carefully and rather slowly. The shift mechanism is a tilting of the carriage, as seen on the Hermes Baby. After all, the typmng feel is good, but with the downside of considerably slowing down your typing. The Collection: Continental 100

The Collection: Continental 100 In the series "The Collection", we present the type- writers on the shelves of maschinengeschrieben. This Friday, it's the Continental l00. In the early 1930s, the Wanderer—Werke started to produce a series of portable typewriters. the Conti« nental Kleinschreibmaschine. Several different models with more or less features, but all with the same design were produced in that decade. With only two exceptions: The Continental 200, an ultra-flat type- writer (Georg owns one}, of which very few facts are known, and the luxurios Continental 100, the top-of- the-line model with a boxy design and an entirely unioue way of setting tabs and margins. The Continental 100 was probably introduced in 1938 and cost 440 Fr. in Switzerland, which is about 3350 Fr. or 3425 USD. The Continental 100 clearly wasn't a cheap machine, therefore. only few models are known in the present day. And that's a shame, because the Continental 100 is a solid machine, has a nice design and the very clever tab-and-margin-in—one feature I discussed in an earlier post. The typing feel of the Continental 100 didn't appeal me at first, but after % page I've now typed, I think I might get used to it. It is like a Hermes 2000 minus the strong snap, which I didn't like there. A clear drawback is the carriage shift, which one definitely wouldn't expect from a "Luxusmodell". To make things worse, the key for the shifting needs to be pressed quite far down, about 9.5 cm. After all, this machine is better oualified for English typing with far less capital letters than German. One thing I need to add about the typing feel is that it's probably the slighty unusual noise, it seems nuite a bit damped and the typical clack is less distinct than I'm used to. Four out of Five stars for the typing feel, I'd say. Five for history. maschinengeschrieben.blogsnot.com Continental 100 This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

The Collection: Corona 3

The Collection: Corona 3 In the series "The Collection" the typewriters in the collection of maschinengeschrieben are presented. This Friday, it's the Corona 3. In 1907, the Standard Folding Typewriter went into production. Despite its"groundbreakingly portable masures, sales were rather low. In 1909, the rights were sold to a consortium, and production was moved to Groton. To make the name suitable for the European market, the machine was renamed to Corona in 1911. The Corona 3 was very popular with allied troops during the first World War, and in 1919, a total of 275'900 machines had been sold, 81'OOO in 1919 alone. Even though more advanced typewriters like the Underwood 3, the Remington Portable or the Corona 4 were introduced over time, the Corona 3 stayed in production until 1941, with over 700'OO0 specimen made, thus making it one of the most successful typewriters in history. With that high number of Corona 3s produced, it's a happy fact that many of them survived. My Corona Three was produced in 1922, the tiny serial number stamping at the underside of the back frame says 578623.The first thing that one notices when seeing a Corona 3 is how small (and cute) it is. It's tiny! The solution of folding the carriage with ribbon assemblage over the keyboard for carrying makes the Corona really compact, the case is only 11.5x32x24 cm and weighs (with typewriter) 4.4 kg. Thea} itself is only 3.1 kg light. When typing on the Corona 3, one notices the "missing" keyboard row, but the double- shift is actually pretty intuitive, I think I achieve a slightly lower typing speed but amke few errors (ha. ha.) Also, there's plenty of room for special charac- ters, allowing all the numbers, but only by omitting the Umlaute, there's alos room for «Sam on my keyboard that was (at least once) equipped with a special type- slug. There's °‘°/ and + as well, but surprisingly no asterisk. Typing feel is good, noise a bit sharp. Totally recommended to everyone. ’" maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Corona 3 This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

The Collection: Adler Tippa

The Collection: Adler Tippa In the series "The Collection", we present the newest additions to the collection of maschinen— geschrieben. This Friday, it's a 1960s Adler Tippa. Two-Tone Typer In 1950, Gossen introduced their Tippa typewriter as "Office in a briefcase". It was a lightweight, small portable. The machine was a success, and in 1956, the much bigger Adler company bought the Tippa license from Gossen. Adler continued - the popular machine, and in 1960, it was re- introduced with a new design, plastic hull, modern Keys and two-tone colour design. The appealing design won several design prizes, and the machine sold well. Not a big surprise: The post-war portable has an excellent typing feel. It is snappy, light, fast. The keys are executed in a convenient triangle shape with rounded croners corners, the shift is light and the carriage return werks well. The problem is the loud typing noise, the keys transmit much force onto the typebar,.resulting in a sharp, loud impact. Even though there's a metal part supposed to slow the typebars down before hitting the type- bar guide, the typing noise is very loud. Not suited for nighttime typing. On the other hand, even though the plastic top cover of my Tippa has become loose on one end, there's no rattling from this. Overall, the 2nd generation Tippa is a nice and stylish typewriter. Totally recommended getting one! ‘ n"*%&()_=/*9 123h56789é‘A QWERTZUIOP§ qwertzuiopfi ASDFGHJKL+: asdfghjkloa YXcvBNM?V' yxcvbnm,.- maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com 1961 Adler Tippa U2h3895 This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

The Collection: Orga Privat

I have to add that the Orga Privat doesn't have a bad typing feel, but it definitely isn't suitable for fast typing or long typing - the typebars tend to jam. The unusual carriage return, on the other hand, is quite intuitive.

The Collection: Orga Privat In the series "The Colleutiony we present the type- writers on the shelves of maschinengeschrieben. This friday, it's the aged Orga Privat. The german people's typewriter. in l922, toy manufacturer Bing of uuremberg released their first typewriter: The ORGA. It wads a dstandard, designed for office use. I don't know about its spread, but one year later, in 1923, the Orga Privat was int- roduced - slightly smaller and p obably much cheaper. it also included a technical advancement: Thanks to the tinmetal toy production of Bing Werke,-the Urge privat was the first typewriter with a self—support. in; tinmetal case. The Orga Privat was an affordable typewriter and was advertised as Volksscnreibmaschine, people's typewriter. With 12 different models, the Urea frivat was produced from 1923 to 1949. In 1952, orga stopped manufacturing of typewriters. Bing is still in business today, thougn, and produces carbu- retors. This Urga, a model 3 from l9?6, is a very interesting machine. lt really shows why the Orga was affordable: First example: There is no right margin. The bar for the margins just stops at the 40-position. Second example: lhe caps lock: Nothing more than a bar which xeeps the shift xey down. On the other side, the Urga is well—engineered, seems nearly indestrudable. The carriage shift is surprisingly light, and the touch lS Okay for a typewriter nearly ninety years old. It is - probably also due to the petrified platen - very loud and sounds tinmetal1ic,but is oxay to type on.‘ There is a lot of dirt on the typeslugs and tne margin is a bit erratic, but the typewriter isn't all tnat bad. only a bit big. And heavy as hell. especially thanks to a massive, wooden base. maschinengeschrieben.blogspotcom. Urge Privat This awesome post was brought to you by the mighty Typosphere

The Collection: Optima Elite

*The color of the Optima Elite is a fresh green - it doesn't show up well in the photos.

The collection: Optima Elite in the series "The Collection", we present the type- writers on the selves of masdinengeschrtben. Ihis Eriday‘s machine is a green optima nlite i saved from the trash bin. At the meeting of the SWiS€ typewriter collector's club, there were “serious” collectors, men well advanced in years, many of them former typewriter repairmen or in some other relation to those machinery, with malling—nansen in their collection and the younges' pieces older than my oldest machine. slack machines, from the years before l92u. one of these rare writing irons can easily cost more thn the entire collection of a typospherian. From time to time, thdgh, they get machines - or are asked if they want them - thm;they don't even consider wort collecting. ihis Optima Elite, in fresh green and the round, later design was one of them. Apart from a dent on the left side of the top cover and some around the carriage, it was in pristine condition, the type- bars are clean, there is no smell... It even came with its original (germab manual. And it is surprisin- gly quiet. The only problem was the spacebar, where one screw was missing, so it wasn't fixed on the left side. I corrected that with a drop of hdt glue. ' After world war II, Olympia engineers fled from the soviet-occupied part of eastern germany, where the Olympia typewriters were being made until then. They brought their know-how to western Germany and after a few stages in between, production of typewritrs started again, in Wilhalmshaven. Meanwhile, in the soviet zone, the original factory had started po pnfl- uce typewriters, too, and a few years later, there was the court decision that the western Olympia could keep their name and the original factory in the east has to change it. They renamed it Optima, after a font. Still, the Olympia SM—2, 3 and 4 and the Optima.Elite have shared ancestors. Numerous designs remained un- changed, not only in my earlier Optima Elite, but also in this later one. In terms of typing action, there is a cenin change, though. This machine is not as snappy as an Olympia SM—3, but is stillquite snappy} Therd is a certain tehdency 0£.th3rtypebars to stiqk toegther_thoRuh. but I'm not sure if this is a technical problem of , this machine, or if I just needed tp get used to th- ese keys more. ’ - ‘ maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Optima Elite. Nith that huge number 0 machines made, the Underwood four is one of the all-time best—rellers, together with the Corona 3. This particular machine, 456727, was made in 1929 in Qridgeport, Connectitut.'It was initially sold by L. Huber, Tel 1040, "Safran". Safran is not a place in Switzerland, but as Georg pointed out, it is a house of a guild in Basel. I got this machine a few kilometers outside of Basel, and it's very supposable that this machine stayed close to its point of sale in the old town of Basle. The Underwood Four features a manual ribbon reverse, color selection, a backspacer and manual margin release, which works on both sides. The spacing is set with the same lever as on the 50s- Underwood Finger-Flite. I am rather surprised by the little paper fingers, the same function as on Underwood 3s and early Corona As, since there's also a paper bail lever. I have no idea why they chose to use both approaches. The touch of the Underwood Four is nice, snappy, maybe a tit unusual in the beginning. It reminds me of the Continental 340, but is different. I especially like the numbers of this machine, they're some sort of filigrane: 1234567890. § I recommend getting one of the l.2 million of these machines. maschinengeschriaben.blogspot.c0m (‘ Underwood Four-Bank 455727 1927 This post was brought to you by The Typosphere

The Collection: Triumph Perfekt

I forgot to mention the weight of this behemoth: 8.3 kg in the case, 6 without.

The Collection: Triumph Ierfekt In the series "The Collection". published every Vriday, we present the newest machines in the hoard of maschinengeaohrieben. In this issue, it’: the 1961 Triumph Ferfekt. Solid office '.'rcr1'cr In 1909. Triumph. a comepny manufacturing bikes, bought an insolvent typewriter factory. All business areas except the typewriter dcpartement were abrogated. In this period, this bulbous Triunnh Ferfekt was made. It features a round design which somehow resembles of the legendary Voss. which is a bit older. I don't think they're re- lated, though. This might have bust been a popular design these days.- The Triumph Perfekt is 13 cm high, but despite that size, the Triumpi-Adler) engineers didn't manage to include segment shift in the feature list, In my opinion. that's a major disadvan- tage, especially since every shifting inter- rupts the writing flow. because the Triumph types very light overall, also the carriage return feels like pushing it over an air cushion. but the sflting is rather hard and heavy. As mentioned hefore. the touch of this machine is light. snappy and I could imagine writing longer text with this machine. but the drawback is the unconvenient sflfting. The Collection: Olivetti Lettera 32

And here's the solution to yesterday's little quiz:

the collection: olivetti lettera 32 In the series "The Ool1ection"‚ published every Friday‚ we present the typewriters used by maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com. A writing design icon. In 1949, Marcello Nizzoli designed the Olivetti Lettera 22. It was agreat success‚ Leonard Cohen and Pier Pasolini used it‚ the former one even in the bathtub. After 14 years of prosperity‚ the Lettera 22 was replaced by the Lettera 32, also designed by Nizzoli and without many big differences. That lasted for many years to come‚ most of the ifllowing Olivetti portables were not much more than the Lettera 32cin a varied outer design. Examples would be the Dora, its twins (Underwood 919) or the (in)famous Valentine. But‚ compared to the Valentine, the Lettera feels mudl better. And it's a famous design product‚ too. The only 4.2 kg light machine is equipped with light basket shift and a tabulator - that makes it the smallest and lightest full—featured machine I know. Only an individual touch regulator isn't present. The touch on the Olivetti Lettera is generally light‚ the typing feel is convenient. With a new ribbon‚ this l967—model leaves a consistant typeface. A drawback for bigger-handed typists are the tiny keys‚ the keytops measure 1,4 cm and can be rather hard to hit‚ the spacebar is even worse‚ at the thickest place‚ it's only 0.7 cm wide. Despite this little discomfort, I can absolutely recommend this little machine. masohinengeschrieben.blogspot.com Olivetti lettera Olivetti Lettera 32 — 2902601 - 1967 Die Sammlung: Olivetti Lettera 32 In der Reihe "Die Ool1ection", veröffentlicht jedes Freitag, präsentieren wir die Schreibmaschinen von maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com.

The Collection: Remington Portable 2

The Collection: Remington Portable 2 In the series "The Collection", published every Friday‚ we present the typewriters collected by maschinengeschrieben.blogspot.com. This time‚ it's a mysterious Remington Portable 2. In 1920, Remington released the Remington Portable, not the first portable typewriter, but the first with a standard keyboard and same functioanlities like the office machines. In 5 years, about 600'000 of them were made, it was a great sucress. In October l925‚ Remington released an improved model, of which about 300'000 were made within 3 years. It was this the Remington Portable 2, although Remington never officially called it so. But you'd better read this whole story over at Richard Polt's comprehensive page, linked below. Being the first design of its kind, the Remington Portable is a brilliant model. For example‚ to keep the machine flat (only a little more than 8 cm high)‚ the typebars must be raised before writing. Ingeniousl Or, since a carriage return lever has to be over everything else, it isn't a big one‚ but a small one at the left end of the carriage. I thought it would be diflficult to get used to that design‚ but it's actually pretty intuitive. The ribbon re- Verse is semi-automatic‚ I think it works automatis- ally‚ but can be apyyygy operated manually. There's even a lever to make the platen rotate freely. The typing feel is good, maybe a bit short', but I like it very much. The maohine is a bit noisy‚though The shift mechanism is a light carriage shift‚ mo- ving the carriage a bit up- and baokwards. This machine was initially sold by the Remington House of Anton Waltisbühl in?urich. Sadly, the warranty sticker has yellowed over the years and I can't read the date of purchase completely, but I'm tempted U> say it was the 17th of ?? I927, with the year not sure. And this would fit the machine: According to Richard's page, early Portable 2 may have the same decal "RemingtonPortable" as the l. Mine does. But then oomes the problem of the serial number: Vll52l2. That would mean it was manufactured in October 1928.
